Self-Coach Sunday 69: Get Yourself Unstuck

The key to making a big change is to make a little change. It is all about inertia. The idea of making a big change can be overwhelming, so we don’t do anything. Inertia – the tendency of bodies at rest to stay at rest – will keep you where you are unless you do something.

This is where taking baby steps comes in to play. Try creating a plan with smaller steps.  This can lead to the big change over time. Any change may lead to more change. So, take a different route home, drink tea instead of coffee, eat at a new restaurant. Any small change will do. This momentum get you going and can lead you to bigger changes effortlessly.

What small change can you make today to help create upward momentum?

Wellness Coaching Pointer: Take A Power Nap

If you already meditate, good for you! If meditation doesn’t work for you then consider calling that time a power nap. Set the scene: pillow, comfy throw, relaxing music or sounds of waves, closed eyes, or whatever makes you feel relaxed.  The point here is to do nothing. You can even fall asleep. If thought pop up in your head, have a pen and pad handy to jot them down and clear them out. Now, just lie there until you feel like getting up.

This time may offer a much needed clearing out, or a welcome of new ideas. You may even get answers to things that you have been pondering. The point is really to take time to meditate, relax and do nothing.  But if something does come up, keep note.

See if you can find time to sit. You can work in a daily power nap and make some space for creative thought to flourish.

Self-Coach Sunday 63: Strengthen Your Strengths

This is a time to lay down your notion of doing it all and doing everything perfectly. We live in a time where we do not need to do it all. What if you just strengthened your strengths? Really take a look at what you are good at, and focus on or master that. Just delegate the rest.

People who master a strength tend to attract the good life. Doing a lot of things fairly well is not as valuable as doing one thing extremely well. Mastery is an art. Stop trying to be good at everything. Instead, focus on your strengths. Keep track of the things that you don’t like to do or are not your strengths. Rather than trying to do them, find someone else to do them for you.

Still trying to find your path in life? You may need to take a retreat from your current life and get a broader perspective. Go outside of yourself to see what really fills you up.

Here are some ways to take a retreat:

  1. Pack your bags and head to a B-n-B or cabin in the woods
  2. House sit for a friend
  3. Get out of the house – go to a cafe, restaurant, park, library, etc.
  4. Go on a yoga/spa retreat or to a ranch
  5. Go to a monastery or abbey

Try to go away or at least leave your house during the day for at least three days, if you can. Even one day can make a difference. Be sure to pack a  journal to record your thoughts. Keep it simple and don’t pack too much. During this time, get creative and find some way to get perspective on your life.

Self-Coach Sunday 55: Discover Your Unique Talent

We all have something that we do or some way we see it that is different or better than anyone else. This is something that may come easy to you, but not easy for someone else. Here is a way to discover your unique talents:

Interview your friends, family and colleagues.

Here are some questions to ask them:

  1. What do you think is my greatest strength?
  2. What is my biggest weakness?
  3. What do you see as my special talent or gift? Something that is effortless and comes naturally to me.
  4. When am I fully expressing this gift of talent?

The next step is to do these things that come easy to you. People who do work that is in line with their natural talents and values are very happy and feel rewarded and fulfilled. Do one thing today that expresses one of your gifts. Then incorporate it into your daily life.
